He’d screwed up.
He never should have told her about football. He saw it in her eyes, in her body language, as she withdrew from him and quickly resurrected the wall that had started to crumble over the last twenty-four hours.
Did she have something against football? Or football players?
Whatever it was, he needed to fix it, stat.
Because despite every ounce of better judgment he possessed, he was afraid he was actually falling for Ava—
He blinked. He didn’t even know her last name.
How could he be falling for a woman he knew almost nothing about?
He only knew she was from Michigan and lived in Knoxville. Then there was the story about her dad and her ex-boyfriend. He knew her job and her dreams.
Okay, maybe he knew some. But there was still so much he wanted to know, and now, as he could feel her withdrawing, he feared he wouldn’t get the chance.
Taking a risk, he scooped up her hand and held it in his own, squeezing it lightly. “What gives, Ava?”
She glanced at their hands and then up at him. “What do you mean?”
“I say the word ‘football’ and completely lose you. You have something against the game?”
She tried to remove her hand, and as much as he wanted to resist, he let her. “It isn’t that.”
“Then what is it?”
“I—don’t really know. If I’m honest, you make me uncomfortable and scare me a little.”
He frowned. That was the last thing he wanted to do. “How so?”
“I don’t know how to explain it. I just—I’m not looking for a relationship. I told you that up front.”
“And I told you the same thing.”
He saw her throat bob in a gulp. “Yeah, but it doesn’t feel like—”
“Like what?”
She turned to him. “You held my hand a second ago.”
He tried to follow her reasoning but was more confused than ever. “And that scared you?”
“A little. I—” Her gaze shifted to stare somewhere out in the ocean—or maybe it was the sky. He couldn’t tell. “I told myself after Ryan that I’d never let myself be in a position where a man could hurt me again.”
Dots connected.
Ryan must be her alcoholic ex-boyfriend.
Part of him wanted to scoop her up in his arms and swear he’d never hurt her. Another part of him wanted to go hunt down this Ryan punk and pummel him.
Yet, he knew that neither of those things were going to help Ava at the moment, so he closed his eyes and begged God to give him words and not let him make it worse. “I don’t think—” He stopped, his spirit nudging him in a different direction. Not a direction he wanted to go—but it was clear he needed to share. “Did I tell you about Felicia?”
Her gaze moved back to his, her eyes holding a tinge of skepticism. “No?”
Gently, he put his hand back in hers—thankful when she didn’t pull back this time. He needed the strength it provided to go on. “I met her my senior year of college, right after I was drafted.
